You could use any jam or preserves you have instead of the cream cheese, you could roll this out , then spread the cream cheese or preserves. I decide to add lemon extract to the glaze cause I love lemon. After the dough is together and been in the fridge for 2 hours you turn it out onto your counter and divide the dough into 18 pieces.
Roll each piece out to a length of 15 inches , then coil it up loosely and tuck the end underneath the coil.
After they're all coiled up , put them on a greased cookie sheet and let them rise.
After they rise take the back of a spoon ( I used the back of my small cookie scoop) and make an indentation in the center.
Fill that indentation up with the cream cheese filling. Next time I'm gonna put some cherry pie filling in there with the cream cheese, Whooo Hooo!
Bake them for about 12 minutes, make the glaze and drizzle over the coils after they've cooled. Then grab yourself a cup of coffee and dig in.
You'll want to microwave these to get the fullest yummy effect possible.

Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours.
3/4 cup sugar, divided
2 (1/4 ounce) packages active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1 egg
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 egg yolk

Glaze

Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours.
Now turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 18 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball; roll each into a 15" rope. Holding one end of the rope, loosely wrap dough around, forming a coil. Tuck the end under; pinch to seal. Place the coils 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
In a small mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, egg yolk, vanilla and remaining sugar; beat until smooth. Using the back of a spoon, make a 1" wide indentation in the center of each coil; spoon a rounded tablespoon of cream cheese mixture into each indentation.
Bake at 400*F. for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from baking sheets to wire racks to cool.
In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough water to get a drizzling consistency. Drizzle over cooled rolls. Store in the fridge, and enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThe cream cheese coils look delicious. I used to bake more yeast things when I was younger and had more time in the house all day, and I'm slowly going back to doing it again. It's nothing to be afraid of, it's just a daunting amount of work sometimes.
If I served this to my husband I'd have to make the jam variation since he has an intolerance/downright fear of dairy products, but he loves little rolls of all sorts as I mentioned before, so he'd gobble them in no time.
Yummy....do you think you'll have any left by the time I get there from Houston!!?!?!?
